Mother’s Day - Go Above and Beyond
A light dusting of snow settles on the hills. Our breath hangs in the frosty air as we watch the mountains catch the first light of day. Winter is on its way, with fresh snow on the horizon.
But we’re not quite there yet. In these quieter weeks before the season begins, when the sun sets earlier and evenings grow longer, we find ourselves reliving winters gone by. Favourite ski movies are back on repeat, the mountains never far from our thoughts.
With Mother’s Day approaching, there’s one short film we keep coming back to. Dear Superhero featuring HMH guide and The North Face Team athlete Janina Kuzma as she embraces motherhood while continuing her career as a professional skier
It’s honest, powerful, and one not to miss. Watch HERE
On winter mornings in Wānaka, Janina can often be found loading skis and avi gear into a heli for a day of ripping steep lines in her home mountains of Wānaka.
As friends and colleagues, we’re constantly in awe. Not just of her skiing, but of the quiet strength it takes to balance family and career. By the time Janina arrives for work, she’s already moved mountains to make sure her own baby girl is happy, healthy, and cared for. Her infectious smile and pure stoke for being in the alpine environment is contagious, and a privilege to share. Janina is a true matriarch of the mountain community, and we’re proud to know her.
Dear Superhero is a reminder that for adventurous women, a connection to the mountains is vital to preserve peace and passion. This Sunday, we celebrate the strength, care, and impact of motherhood in all its forms. Whether you’re honouring your own mum, a mother you admire, or you’re the mum at the heart of your home, a cosy ski movie night with a good cheese board and a glass of wine could be just the thing.
And because Mum deserves more than just one day, why not surprise her an experience she will never forget… a heli-ski experience to share together this winter? Motherhood doesn’t always leave much time for the things that make us feel most alive, but can you picture her smile after a day carving smooth turns in the backcountry.
The gift of an experience that speaks to her love of adventure, freedom, and the mountains shows how well you know her. It’s a winter memory in the making and something to look forward to in the weeks before the snow gods bring the goods and turn it on!
